Thorntons has announced that 36 gas station/convenience store locations throughout the company's retail network now offer E85 flex fuel: seven in Illinois, 11 in Indiana, 11 in Kentucky and seven in Tennessee.

E85 is an alcohol-based fuel comprised of 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline. As an alternative fuel, E85 has experienced tremendous growth in the last 10 years, due primarily to its benefits as a renewable fuel that helps create a cleaner environment, boosts the U.S. economy and reduces oil imports, the company said.

"We are very excited about the expansion of E85 fuel in our stores," said Matt Thornton, president and CEO of Thorntons. "We support the use of ethanol, wherever it is economically available."

Louisville, Ky.-based Thorntons operates 165 gasoline and convenience stores, car washes and travel plazas in five states: Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee. Thorntons distributes its petroleum products through its wholly owned Thornton Transportation Co. and operates a river bulk storage terminal in Louisville.
